Building on history, sending agents into the future - rangeland modelling, retrospect and prospect.

Abstract

This paper examines how rangeland modelling has emerged from its roots in reductionist excellence to stand on the threshold of a new 'agent-based' modelling phase. The process is examined starting from its analytical phase, past and present. The future of rangeland modelling with synthesis is also explored. The challenges and opportunities faced by rangeland modelling in its synthetic phase are presented.
