Case studies: Emergencies [Practical Guide to Mainstreaming Gender in Water Projects]
Abstract
This group of 14 case studies that have been collected under the heading 'Emergencies' form part of a project on mainstreaming gender in water projects to bring issues of social exclusion in the practical development of infrastructure in low-income countries into the core of project planning and design. They have been kept short and edited slightly to bring out the engineering issues. Topics covered are: Risks to men in conflict situations; Preserving of family structures; Cyclone shelters; Vulnerability of men in emergencies; Participation in emergencies; Women invisible to project planners; Inaccurate information exchange; Attitudes to food during a famine; Refugee camp planning; The design of washing facilities; Use of water supply systems; Location of water points; Excuses for not considering gender; and Vulnerability in earthquakes.
