Case studies: Irrigation [Practical Guide to Mainstreaming Gender in Water Projects].
Abstract
This group of 11 case studies that have been collected under the heading 'Irrigation' form part of a project on mainstreaming gender in water projects to bring issues of social exclusion in the practical development of infrastructure in low-income countries into the core of project planning and design. They have been kept short and edited slightly to bring out the engineering issues. Topics covered are: Learning the lessons; Who drives the programme; Paper pushing; Farmers and builders suck the ground dry; Allocating land; Services for women are not additional; Inequitable access to funds; Rich, poor, poorer; Women' s needs identification; Gender in local IWRM; and Importance of women's time and labour to project success.
