Case studies: Sanitation [Practical Guide to Mainstreaming Gender in Water Projects].
Abstract
This group of 11 case studies that have been collected under the heading 'Sanitation' form part of a project on mainstreaming gender in water projects to bring issues of social exclusion in the practical development of infrastructure in low-income countries into the core of project planning and design. They have been kept short and edited slightly to bring out the engineering issues. Topics covered are: Equity in sanitation provision; Nomads demand latrines; Demand for latrines; Assessing priorities for sanitation; Privacy and convenience; Women's use of latrines; Identification and targeting of vulnerable groups; Cultural considerations for location of toilets and design of plots; Design parameters; Vulnerabilities and preferences of women regarding sanitation provision; and Cultural considerations in the provision of sanitation facilities.
