Case studies: Water resources [Practical Guide to Mainstreaming Gender in Water Projects].

Abstract

This group of 11 case studies that have been collected under the heading 'Water resources' form part of a project on mainstreaming gender in water projects to bring issues of social exclusion in the practical development of infrastructure in low-income countries into the core of project planning and design. They have been kept short and edited slightly to bring out the engineering issues. Topics covered are: Who is the water for? Household size; How to miss project goals; Representation on committees; Water delivery systems and household water needs;Traditional water sources meet multiple needs; Local information on water sources; Planning for local conditions; Siting hand dug wells; Synchronising technical and social components; and Spring selection.
