Abstract
The aim of the present study was to examine the extent to which Banja la Mtsogolo (BLM, the Malawi affiliate of Marie Stopes International), clients reflect the local population in the close environs of the clinic, both socio-economically and demographically. Exit interviews were conducted in 2002 with women attending three BLM clinics in the Lilongwe area. A household survey of women in the three communities surrounding the clinics was also undertaken. The findings are presented under the headings: Characteristics of interviewees; Clients: characteristics in relation to services used; Clients: characteristics and residence; The community: associations with use and non-use of RH services; The community: associations with users' choice of RH service provider; Dynamics of choice and access; and Cost as a barrier. It was concluded that satisfaction with BLM services was high. No notable groups were excluded.
