Citizenship and Social Movements: Perspectives from the Global South

Abstract

The debates over social movements have suffered from a preoccupation with North America and western Europe, often neglecting the significance of collective action in the global South. This book - the fifth of a Zed Book series on Claiming Citizenship - seeks to partially redress this neglect with case study material from countries such as Brazil, India, Bangladesh, Mexico, South Africa, Kenya and Nigeria. These examples point to the complex relationships that influence mobilisation, suggesting that previous theories have underplayed the influence of state power and elite dominance in the government and non-governmental organisations.
