Concentrating solar power in Africa, April 2009.
Abstract
This is the response to a TI-UP Helpdesk enquiry for a report on Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) technologies to confirm or otherwise whether CSP is an option for Africa. It covers the key CSP technologies, concentrating photovoltaics, solar parabolic troughs, linear Fresnel collectors, solar power tower, dish Stirling engines, updraft towers and the integration into conventional power plants. This report describes the key technologies, their current status and current and planned installations in Sections 2 and 3. Indicative capital and levelised energy costs for CSP plants are given in Section 4. In Section 5, the potential for using CSP in Africa is discussed, including incentive measures to encourage the development of CSP plants in this region.
