Developing and adopting mental health policies and plans in Africa. Lessons from South Africa, Uganda and Zambia

Abstract

The Mental Health and Poverty Project (MHaPP) is a 5-year study of mental health policy, legislation and services in 4 African countries: Ghana, South Africa, Uganda and Zambia. This policy brief is structured around the following headings:
1. What is the current state of mental health policies and plans in Africa?
2. What did we do? (This includes national mental health policies for Uganda and South Africa, a national mental health services strategic plan for Zambia, and a provincial mental health plan for the Northern Cape, South Africa)
3. What lessons can we learn from these examples for developing and adopting mental health policies and plans?
