Department for International Development (DFID) Evidence Survey Results Report. November 2013

What are the strengths and weakness of DFID as an evidence-informed organisation? What can we do to improve?

Abstract

The DFID evidence survey was set up in July 2013 to address two important questions:
i. What are the strengths and weakness of DFID as an evidence-informed organisation?
ii. What can we do to improve?

Some 446 DFID staff participated in the survey. With a response rate of 81% from the 552 staff who were invited to take part, the results are broadly representative for the organisation.

This report sets out:

1. An overview of the survey design, setting out the conceptual framework that supports the survey design and implementation as well as details of the survey sample.

2. The survey results, focusing on:

  • Evidence value and use
  • Management support for the use of evidence
  • Evidence skills and knowledge
  • Evidence availability and accessibility
  • Research design

3. What happens next? How the findings from this survey will be used to improve how DFID engages with, and uses evidence for, its policy and programme decision-making.
