District level AFB Quality control experiences in Pakistan.
Abstract
Checking the quality of diagnosis in peripheral laboratories can be difficult because of a shortage of suitable technicians. The project described here has developed innovative systems for monitoring quality of tuberculosis diagnosis using human resources routinely available at health facilities at the district and provincial levels, namely technicians from other programmes in the district health system. It developed the skills of district laboratory supervisors using field-tested guidelines and training materials. The approach has been adapted for malaria and could potentially be adapted for other communicable diseases.
