Early mortality following ART initiation in HIV-infected adults and children in Uganda and Zimbabwe.
Abstract
This study investigated the phenomenon of a higher mortality rate in the initial months of antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV infection among both adults and children in Uganda and Zimbabwe. The mortality rate was higher in the early months in both adults and children, especially in patients with low CD4 cell counts; there was no significant difference between the age groups. Comparison with data from the years before ART was available showed that mortality in the early months of ART was still lower than that in patients without ART.
