Economics of Avian Flu Policy

Abstract

This briefing looks at economic aspects of avian influenza and its control. An economic framework for public policy design will aim to minimize the total expected costs of lost livestock, risk to people, and prevention, control and treatment of the disease in poultry and humans. The cost of lost livestock includes both costs to farmers and welfare losses to consumers.
