Fuel Substitution: Poverty Impacts on Biomass Fuel Suppliers. Final Technical Report.
Abstract
This project aimed to quantify the impacts that fuel substitution has on poor people engaged in the fuel supply trade and look at the wider economic impacts in terms of import dependency and the local economy. An assessment matrix was developed to compare the impacts of different mitigation options on a range of key environmental, health, economic and social indicators.
Following a summary of the project objectives, and descriptions of the methodology used (survey instruments and rationale; sustainable livelihoods framework), biomass energy use, an historical perspective of fuel substitution, and profiles of urban fuel suppliers in Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda are presented. Livelihood analyses of fuel suppliers and consumers, and the impacts of fuel substitution interventions are described and discussed.
