Genetic diversity and stock structure of Lake Tanganyika Kapenta (Limnothrissa miodon) introduced to African lakes. Final Technical Report.
Abstract
The present project examines levels of genetic diversity and stock separation in kapenta fisheries in Lakes Tanganyika (Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia and Zaire), where it is endemic, and Kariba (Zambia and Zimbabwe) and Kivu (Zaire and Rwanda), where it was introduced in 1959 and 1967-68, respectively.
This final technical report provides and executive summary and then presents a general introduction discussing the aims and scope of the final report, project aims and any changes, genetic management of capture fisheries, aspects of the biology of Limnothrissa, salient features of the environmental background and a reevaluation of the project aims. Subsequent sections concern sampling of kapenta (in Zambia, Tanzania, Burundi and Rwanda), morphometrics, allozyme analysis, and mitochondrial DNA analysis, and are followed by a general discussion.
