Genetic variability in indigenous and exotic varieties of cowpea
Abstract
Days to flowering and maturity are important traits in cowpea and are affected by photoperiod and temperature. Eleven cowpea varieties were evaluated in three seasons at Pantnagar, to estimate genetic variability for days to flowering, days to maturity, days from flowering to physiological maturity (pod filling duration),pods per plant, pod length, no. of seeds per pod as well as seed size and grain yield. Significant differences among varieties were observed for these traits. The cowpea varieties IT-82D889, IT-97K-1042 and IT- 98K-1111 were earliest in flowering, maturity as well as in pod filling duration. Among the eleven varieties IT-82D889, IT-97K-1042, and IT- 98K-1111 gave the high yield ranging from 1252 to 1844 kg/ha. The results indicated that pod filling stage in cowpea can be reduced to protect the crop from insects at reproductive stage without affecting seed yield and seed size.
