How does electricity insecurity affect businesses in low and middle income countries?

Abstract

This study comprised a review of relevant literature, statistical analysis of data from the World Bank Enterprise Surveys from six selected countries (Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Tanzania and Uganda), and the collection and analysis of qualitative information from key informants in four countries (Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, and Uganda). The analysis focused on manufacturing SMEs, which account for significant employment in developing countries and are associated with higher per capita GDP. It gives a number of policy conclusions, and suggests ways for reducing the impact of unreliable energy supply on SMEs.
