HPAI Risk, Bio-Security and Smallholder Adversity
Abstract
This presentation was given at the WPSA Asian Pacific Federation Symposium, held in Bangkok, Thailand, 5-6 March 2007. The main points of the presentation came from a comparison of the biosecurity measures taken at different scales of poultry production, from small-holder to large commercial scale. It was stated that no empirical evidence exists that backyard poultry is at higher risk from highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) than larger ventures; there was evidence provided that pathogens can however overcome the standard biosecurity systems of large, modern poultry farming.
The PPLPI research report \"Evidence-based Policy for Controlling HPAI in Poultry: Bio-security Revisited\" contains related information.
