The issue covers effective professional development, teacher absenteeism and changes in the primary teaching profession
Abstract
18 million primary school teachers are needed over the next decade to meet Universal Primary Education (UPE) goals, says a recent report from the UNESCO Institute of Statistics. This is to fill the new posts needed and the vacancies created by attrition (teachers leaving existing posts). The lead article in this issue discusses the need for more teachers, while other brief articles include: Effective professional development; Teacher absenteeism; Changes in the primary teaching profession; Gender equality and HIV and AIDS; Political violence in Colombia; and Women teachers in Pakistan.
