Improving accessibility for people with disabilities in urban areas.

Abstract

Improving access and mobility of people with disabilities is crucial to alleviating poverty. A three year research programme has commenced in South Africa, India, Malawi, Mozambique and Mexico to assess the access needs of people with various disabilities. This paper describes the status quo in the countries studied, and begins to identify best practices that countries throughout the developing world may wish to pursue. The output of the research will be a set of guidelines for reducing mobility barriers in urban areas of the developing world.
