Innovative communal sanitation models for the urban poor. Lessons from Uganda

Abstract

This document, prepared by Shack/Slum Dwellers International (SDI), reports on the process of construction and management of two toilet blocks in Jinja and Kampala (Uganda). It presents an overview and reflection of the design, financial models, processes adopted as well as the challenges faced. Discussions about scaling up sanitation provision through these models are also presented. Finally, the document reports on key lessons learnt from the experience.
