Abstract

Alcohol abuse is a global problem which compromises both individual and social development and contributes to 2.5 million deaths each year. South Africa has one of the highest per capita alcohol consumption rates in the world, with over 30% of the population struggling with an alcohol problem or on the verge of having one. Treating the causes of high alcohol consumption rather than focusing on the effects reveals important development questions linked to the emergence of non-communicable diseases in South Africa. The authors explore the emergence of non-communicable diseases in South Africa, focussing on the harmful use of alcohol as a risk factor for development.
