Is intimate partner violence a risk factor for HIV infection? A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract

Should the response to violence against women be a core part of HIV programming?

This presentation by Charlotte Watts gives a review of existing epidemiological evidence on the association between exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV) and HIV infection.

The prospective studies explored in the review show an association between IPV and HIV in a number of different country settings, however a cross-sectional analysis demonstrates the need for further understanding of the complex pathways between IPV and HIV.
