Leishmaniasis control in eastern Africa: past and present efforts and future needs. Situation and gap analysis.

Abstract

In an attempt to reverse the current increasing trend of leishmaniasis in eastern Africa and strengthen regional control, this report provides an up-to-date and detailed overview of the distribution and burden of the disease in the countries of the region (Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, North Sudan, Southern Sudan and Uganda), past and present control efforts, and research activities. Based on these findings it identifies key gaps in current intervention efforts in the region and puts forward some recommendations on how control could be improved.
