Livelihoods and Development in Core Areas: A Working Paper (preliminary draft).
Abstract
The Core Areas Research project focused its field work on selected sites in
Delhi, Jakarta, and Recife. It looked at ways in which sustainable low-income
housing and small business provision can be integrated with new commercial
developments in a range of developing world contexts.
Household surveys were undertaken in each study area in order to establish the extent to which the livelihoods of site residents would be effected as a result of voluntary or forced eviction to site locations away from their established livelihoods. The project team had a working hypothesis that low-income communities are located in inner city core areas because they want and need to be there for a wide variety of social and economic reasons.
Although the core area research project also looked at sites in Recife, Brazil this report concentrates on presenting and analysing results drawn from the livelihood surveys of sites in Delhi and Jakarta.
