Livelihoods and Policy in the Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining Sector - An Overview.

Abstract

This report seeks to bring together important findings from research on artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) orientated around social and community issues. It identifies a number of key policy challenges, and suggests how these policy challenges might be met.

The report draws on a range of material looking at the sector from across the

world. In particular, it uses two DFID funded livelihoods studies recently carried out in Tanzania and Ghana and five UNDP funded livelihoods studies in

Tanzania, Ghana, Guinea, Mali and Ethiopia. Whilst most of the literature

referred to has not been compiled using a livelihoods methodology, findings

have been grouped and presented in a way that is consistent with a livelihoods approach.
