This Insight provides an overview of the unique challenges faced by South Africa in transitioning to a low-carbon transport sector

Abstract

South Africa is the 14th highest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world. The majority of its emissions come from coal-fired power plants, but transportation is also a major contributor.

A scoping study conducted by EEG in 2019 aimed to identify priority challenges and research topics in South Africa related to low-carbon transport and electricity systems.

This Energy Insight provides an overview of the unique challenges faced by South Africa in transitioning to a low-carbon transport sector.

This research is part of the Energy and Economic Growth Applied Research Programme.
