Managing the Risk of Emerging Diseases: From Rhetoric to Action

Abstract

New infectious diseases affecting humans, such as SARS and HPAI, will continue to emerge from the animal Kingdom, with the potential of human-to-human transmissibility. Current responses to emerging diseases are largely reactive and focus on protection rather than prevention. It is suggested that proactive disease risk management must build on multi-disciplinary collaboration, cross-agency partnerships, international commitment and scientific advances.
