Maternal Health and HIV/AIDS.

Abstract

This fact sheet makes 6 points about maternal health and HIV/AIDS: women of child-bearing age continue to endure the burden of the HIV/AIDS epidemic; the epidemic has had an adverse effect on efforts to reduce maternal mortality rates; many women learn their HIV status through antenatal and childbirth services; HIV is a leading indirect cause of maternal mortality in settings with a high incidence of HIV/AIDS; HIV infection is a major contributor to maternal morbidity; and there is an urgent need for new female-initiated prevention options (such as vaginal microbicides).
