Measuring safety in Kenya’s public sector vehicles using telematics and passenger feedback

A pilot to understand driving safety among matatus (minibuses) in Kenya.

Abstract

From 2020 to 2022, the World Bank Development Impact (DIME) Group implemented a pilot to understand driving safety among matatus (minibuses) in Kenya using crowdsourced passenger feedback and telematics data. The project worked with 202 long-range matatus; stickers were installed on 77 vehicles that enabled passengers to provide feedback and telematics devices were installed on 150 vehicles where 25 vehicles had both stickers and telematics devices installed.
