Meningococcal disease in countries of the African meningitis belt, 2012: Emerging needs and future perspectives
This belt comprises 22 countries from Senegal in the west to Ethiopia in the east and a population of over 400 million
Abstract
Every year, bacterial meningitis epidemics affect a large region of sub-Saharan Africa known as the “meningitis belt”. This zone comprises 22 countries from Senegal in the west to Ethiopia in the east and a population of >400 million. The burden of the disease in this area is considerable, owing to hyperendemic meningococcal disease and intense recurring large-scale epidemics with annual incidence reaching 1000 case per 100000 population.
