Oil shock vulnerabilities and impacts: Nigeria case study

Abstract

This report forms part of the “Oil Shock Mitigation Strategies” research project for the UK Department for International Development (DFID). This section of the report presents the net oil exporting country case study (namely, Nigeria) of oil dependencies and vulnerabilities to oil price and supply shocks.

The case study preparation is based on desktop research and utilises existing secondary data sources (such as World Bank, IMF, Energy Information Administration, EIA country analysis for Nigeria, and BP Statistical Review of World Energy). A mix of quantitative and qualitative analysis is employed, to the exclusion of formal quantitative modelling which is beyond the scope of this study. Section 2 lists some key socio-economic indicators for Nigeria. In section 3 Nigeria’s vulnerability to oil price shocks are discussed and section 4 highlights the possible economic and societal impacts of oil shocks. Section 5 summarises and concludes.
