Overview of the NEPAD e-school initiative in the promotion of community health literacy in African schools

Abstract

The e-schools project is one of a number of initiatives established by governments and NGOs to make the use of ICT for teaching and learning a reality in schools around the world. The basic aim of the Health Point element of the initiative is to facilitate easier access to knowledge about various communicable diseases. It aims at empowering learners, teachers and the neighbouring communities to protect themselves from diseases that essentially spread as a result of ignorance, incapacity and poverty.

This study focused on the e-schools initiative of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD). It examined the impact of the initiative and also aimed to provide insight that complemented the larger EdQual Use of ICT project by focusing on e-schools that are largely located in marginalised areas.
