Participative Planning of Off-Grid Electricity Supplies

Abstract

This paper is an account of a piece of work carried out between 1995 and 1999 by Intermediate Technology Consultants, the consultancy arm of the international charity ITDG. The work sought to extend 'Participation' techniques (commonly used in development work in agriculture and irrigation) to the planning and management of energy supplies in rural areas. In the initial stages of the work, particular attention was paid to the provision of electricity supplies, but this soon extended to cover the provision of energy services in general.
