Participatory Breeding in Rice
Abstract
This chapter considers participatory plant breeding in the eastern Indian state of Bihar. High yielding varieties are compared with the traditional landraces that farmers grow, and which represent a diverse genetic resource. A participatory approach is described, which has been used for varietal selection in rainfed lowland and flood-prone ecosystems in the existing farming systems. Topics covered include, the present system of varietal development, the pattern of adoption of local cultivars in Bihar, targeting the environment, the need for participatory research and the varietal release methodology.
