Participatory Governance? Citizens and the State in South Africa.

Abstract

This book presents, in a distilled form, some of the major findings of the research undertaken by the South African team, based at the Centre for Citizenship and Democracy at the School of Government, UWC. It raises certain key issues and dilemmas around participatory governance processes in South Africa, including the ways in which we understand these processes themselves. The ways in which we understand citizenship and the rights of the citizen in participatory processes is a key theme. In particular, the book draws out some of the policy implications of problems encountered in implementing the notion of participatory democratic government in South Africa.
