Abstract
AsCAP is implementing a 3-year pilot study aimed at developing an innovative and participatory approach for roadside protection on rural roads in Nepal. The report describes the roadside plantations that were planned and implemented for the two pilot sites in Dhankuta District. Site-1 lies in Shahidbhumi Rural Municipality in Dhankuta district and Site-2 lies along the same road corridor (Hile-Chhintang road) and includes parts of both Pakhribas and Dhankuta Municipalities. Both pilot sites were initially assessed for land condition and existing vegetation cover. Then site preparation (clearance, land preparation, composting) followed by plantation establishment and protection measures (from grazing animals) were carried out during July 2018. the Road User Group (RUG) members, together with the rural municipality representatives have agreed to collaborate on the plantation of broom grass (amrisso). There is still an outstanding issue regarding regular road maintenance at both these sites.
