Policy Paper 3. Poverty and Gender Inequalities: Evidence from Young Lives

Abstract

This report draws together Young Lives survey and qualitative data to analyse gendered differences between boys and girls and focuses on three key areas: education and aspirations, domestic life and intra-household dynamics, and subjective well-being. The findings suggest that in improving gender equality, policy interventions, such as improvements to education quality or social protection programmes, should target broader structural inequalities between urban and rural environments and between households with different levels of consumption, and, in particular, support the poorest households.

This report begins with an overview of the Young Lives study and emerging findings on gender, before exploring each of the three key areas in depth. The report concludes by considering the implications for policy.
