Potential impact of new drug development. Synthetic peroxides: a viable alternative to artemisinins.

Abstract

This presentation describes the work of the Medicines for Malaria Venture and four partner organizations to develop synthetic peroxides as an alternative to artemisinin for the treatment of malaria. At the time of the conference, the first compound had recently been tested in patients, with disappointing results, but animal studies of potential second-generation compounds had given promising results. It was hoped that a product could be launched in 2013.
