Productivity and Zinc Concentrations in Grains of Rice and Wheat as Influenced by Zinc-Containing Fertilizers
Abstract
The rice-wheat system, though remunerative, has resulted in the over-exploitation of the natural soil resource base, which has been further degraded by the imbalanced use of inputs, particularly nutrients. Increasing cropping intensity and accompanying changes in the crop, soil and fertiliser management practices have lowered the Zn status of soils and its availability, especially in the Indo-Gangetic plains of India where a rice-wheat cropping system is being practiced on a large-scale (Prasad, 2005). The risk of developing deficiency is higher in populations which consume mainly cereal-based diets with little or no meat consumption. Agronomic fortification is the best option to alleviate the deficiency in human beings. So, experiments on rice and wheat were planned to study the effect of different Zn-containing fertilizers on the productivity and Zn concentration in grain.
