Promoting Sustainable Rural Access and Developing a Risk Based Vulnerability Assessment for Rural Communities in the Changing Climate of Sub Saharan Africa

Abstract

This literature review has been undertaken during the initial phase of a short research study to investigate the relationships between climate variability and projected climate change and the performance of rural roads in the region of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The purpose of the study is to assess what effects these relationships might have on rural community livelihood and is based on the premise that an increase in the intensity of geo-hazards brought about by climate change and an increase in climate extremes will adversely affect rural access. The review chiefly focuses on Ethiopia and Uganda in order to illustrate the relevant issues.
