Protectors of the state? The popular mobilisation forces during the post-election crisis

Examines the Popular Mobilisation Forces role during the 2022 post-election crisis.

Abstract

This paper examines the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) role during the 2022 post-election crisis, with an aim to shed light on its level of institutionalisation six years after its foundation. It focuses on armed clashes that took place inside Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone on 29–30 August 2022 between the PMF and rival forces.

This is an output of the Peace and Conflict Resolution Evidence Platform (PEACEREP) programme.
