Report on the dissemination workshop: Taller sobre geoquímica y medio ambiente con referencia especial a la contaminación minera, 6-7 de Mayo de 1998, Quito, Ecuador. (WC/98/032).
Abstract
This is the report of a workshop which was held in Ecuador where two field assessments were made by BGS of mercury contamination associated with artisanal gold mining in Ecuador. In addition, there are currently concerns being expressed by environmental action groups such as Acción Ecologica and Fundación Natura with regard to the potential impact of mining activities which may result from the DFID-World Bank (WB) funded \"Proyecto Desarrollo Minero y su Control Ambiental\" (PRODEMINCA). It was thus particularly timely to hold a workshop in Quito in order to provide background information on the nature and extent of contamination associated with current mining activities and also on the value for environmental studies of the geochemical data being compiled by the PRODEMINCA project. The workshop was also intended to provide a forum for open discussions between representatives of the main environmental NGOs in Ecuador and professionals involved in mineral exploration and monitoring the impact of mining.
