Research Capacity Strengthening in Low- and Middle-Income Countries

Rapid Evidence Assessment of the literature on interventions to strengthen research systems and organisations

Abstract

International donors have long supported efforts to strengthen research capacity in low- and middle-income countries as a means of achieving long-term sustainable development. Despite interventions stretching back decades, there are few comprehensive assessments of good practice in research capacity strengthening.

Research Consulting undertook a Rapid Evidence Assessment of 227 studies looking at research capacity strengthening in low and medium income-countries. The aim of the project was to identify the strategies and interventions available in low or middle-income countries to strengthen research systems and the enabling environment for research, and to support research organisations in producing and managing research.

This work was funded by the Department for International Development’s Strengthening Research Institution in Africa programme.
