Research Snapshot: A solution to the 'anaesthesia gap'?

Tests the safety of Every Second Matters – Ketamine Humanitarian Crisis™ when administered by non-anaesthetists in crisis-affected regions

Abstract

This research study set out to rigorously test the safety and effectiveness of Every Second Matters – Ketamine Humanitarian Crisis™ (ESM-Ketamine HC™) when administered by non-anaesthetists in the crisis-affected regions of Kenya.

During the study, no deaths or disabilities were attributed to ESM Ketamine. The wide availability and low cost of ketamine was found to have helped with the financial burden of surgeries, decrease waiting times and increase institution surgical capacity. This research snapshot contains messages, findings, implications for humanitarian policymakers and practitioners and recommendations for further research.
