Abstract
The process for integrating and managing environment and climate risks and opportunities into the DFID programme design process has changed. New SMART rules commit DFID to a suite of technical quality standards which guide decisions at each stage of the programme cycle. These include a commitment to the principles of sustainability and resilience and to avoiding doing harm. This replaces the mandatory climate and environment assessment process (CEA). To guide the application of the SMART rules, DFID are examining the appropriateness of existing international climate and environment safeguard systems; they are seeking to understand their relevance to DFID operations. This key sheet was developed in relation to water resources management and supply to trial the production of key sheets to be used during the DFID design process. It is organised under the following headings: Sector components and activities; Sources of impact and receptors/resources; and Mitigation and management options.
