Small Water Enterprises in Africa 1: Tanzania. A Study of Small Water Enterprises in Dar es Salaam.
Abstract
This study was carried out in Sandali Ward in the Temeke Municipality in the southern part of Dar es Salaam. The study area is an informal settlement occupied by low-income residents. Only small areas of two of the five sub-wards have piped water from the utility responsible for water services in the city, and that supply is unreliable. This situation has created an environment conducive to street water vending and the reselling of utility water by neighbours with piped connections. The other sub-wards have no piped water.
This report examines water supply, coping strategies, Small Water Enterprise livelihoods and constraints, and consumer and utility perspectives. Suggestions for improvements in water supply are made. It is suggested that utility distribution pipelines could be extended, and utility kiosks installed that would provide good quality water at affordable prices.
