Small Water Enterprises in Africa 2: Kenya. A study of small water enterprises in Nairobi.
Abstract
This study was conducted in Maili Saba, an informal settlement of nearly 10,000 people in NE Nairobi. The research process adopted a case study approach due to the complexity of the issues, the signficance of the context and lack of existing work in this area.
The most important water supplier in Maili Saba is the utility, which provides over 97% of water sold. Around 89% of the volume sold is through kiosks, with most households getting their own water from the kiosks but 16% buying from tertiary SWEs who buy water from the kiosks and sell it on.
A number of interventions are suggested to improve water services to residents of an informal settlement where the utility is undertaking a pilot intervention. These include physical improvements to the water system, strengthening SWEs, and capacity building.
