Smallholder Contract Farming of Swine in Northern Viet Nam: Study Design
Abstract
Livestock development has been identified as an effective agricultural diversification strategy for Viet Nam, but the current policies in this sector may not be suitable for the end objective of policy reduction, given the scenario of growing globalisation; large commerical livestock production systems provide attractive investment opportunities and have access to animal health services, but much livestock production in Viet Nam is smallholder based. This study was planned to examine how innovations in the pig farming sector, such as contract farming, can contribute to poverty reduction.
The paper explains the objectives of contract farming, with a summary of the risks and rewards of such a system. The research methodology, main partners and expected outcomes from this study are outlined.
