“Smoke and Mirrors” The science of poverty measurement and its application.

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to share what the author thinks he has learnt from 30 years of work in the measurement of poverty and its application. He discusses how this informs his intentions for the newly created Chair in Applied Poverty Reduction Assessment funded by the National Research Foundation and the Department of Science and Technology.
